West Kent Sunday League News Report Sunday 3rd February 2019

Well only a short report this week. The belated arrival of winter, bringing snow and ice leading to frozen pitches resulted in the postponement of all but two of the days matches. Everyone hopes for better weather next week when out two representatives in the Kent County Cups, Simla in the Premier and TW Ridgewaye in the Junior Trophy battle for place in the semi-finals.

WKSFL Senior Cup - Group 2

Whatever faint hopes St John's Yard had of qualifying for the quarter-finals were well and truly shattered by an 11-0 defeat by Green Street Blues on the synthetic grass at Tintagel Road in Orpington. There were two hat-tricks for the Blues, scored by Shaun Boyle and Mike Powell. Frank Ndouga and Rob Shearman both scored twice and it was Romain Duchon adding one.  Nick Edwards kept the clean sheet. After five successive defeats, a welcome morale boost. Blues have three games remaining in this Group. With only three points covering the whole group they have as a good a chance as anyone of making the cut.

Division Two

The only other game to beat the freeze was the Division Two clash between Speldhurst Rangers and Brenchley.

It was kettles at the ready as the Speldhurst groundsmen worked hard to get the game on. They wished they hadn't after fifteen minutes, when keeper Liam Baldwin dropped a cross at  Brenchley player Will Sarjeant's feet for the first goal. Rangers had numerous chances to equalise, but the ball was getting stuck under players feet and the surface tricky to play on.

Just before half time Josh Fermor showed the rest how to finish lashing a ball home from six yards following a goal mouth scramble. It was 1-1 at half time.

With the second period under way, Rangers raced into a 4-1 lead with well taken finishes from Sam Stevens, Ollie Crees and Fermor for his second. Then a rather dubious penalty converted by Mike Williams made it 4-2 and it was game on. Speldhurst then adjusted better to the conditions and utilised the wide men, with Man of the Match Sam Stevens hitting well on the break. Stevens bagged his second goal, Fermor followed with his hat trick strike and Joe Hearndon came off the bench to score the seventh with well taken finish. It was a big win for Speldhurst off the back of a thrashing last week.
