West Kent Sunday League News Report – Sunday 13th March 2022

All games went ahead as scheduled as we start the final ten weeks of the season.

County Cups

The Royal Oak's valiant run in this competition came to an end on Sunday after battling hard for 65 minutes with just ten men.
The Oak made the journey up the M20 on Sunday to put on a sterling performance against strong opposition. The Oak were in the ascendancy for the first half ,having several chances on goal that they were unfortunate to not benefit from. However, Hatcham scored from a well taken set piece, the ball rocketing through the Oak's wall and beating the outstretched Sam Catt in the bottom right corner. The real turning point in the game came, in the 25th minute, when the Oak had Ashley Bell sent off for, for the most innocuous of challenges, but something the referee deemed as a second bookable offence. Although the Oak went in at half time one  goal behind they were very much in the game.

But playing the second half up hill and the Oak down to ten men , Manor took full advantage of the slope and put a further six past the exhausted Oak.  The Oak now look forward to getting back to being involved again in a very interesting Division 3 title race

Dormansland Rockets moved into the semi final of the Surrey Sunday Lower Junior Cup after a hard fought victory over Sutton Knights FC.

In a game where the prevailing wind had an impact on which little football was played, chances were at a premium. It was no surprise therefore to reach half-time with the scores level at 0-0. The second half started in the same vein, until eventually Rockets took the lead through a Rich Wetton penalty after Martyn Bishop had been brought down.

In a game with so few chances, one thought that might be that, but as we all know football has a habit of confounding logic. Barely 90 seconds later Rockets conceded a corner which hit a players' knee and then onto his arm resulting in a penalty which was dispatched by the home side. Ten minutes later Sutton took the lead following a mistake at the back by Rockets.

With Sutton in the ascendancy, Rockets changed their shape and went a bit more gung ho. This resulted in Rich Wetton being pole-axed in the area, but he brushed himself down to score both his and Rockets second goal.

There being no more goals and no extra time, a penalty shoot-out would decide the match. Rockets won this 4-3, successful kicks despatched by Miguel Figueira-Dunne, Dave Heaton, Ashley Hollom and Ross Waghorn. Louis Stone saved two Sutton penalties to ensure that Rockets proceeded to the next round.. Rockets now face a semi final tie on 3rd April away at a team called F&M United, based in Effingham, near Leatherhead. They are currently second in the Leatherhead and District Sunday Football league Division Nine.

WKSFL Senior Cup

As a result of Management Committee decisions concerning unplayed games, there have been adjustments to the three group tables.

Artois United have been awarded three points in respect of their fixture with Odukwe. Next Sunday they will play a re-arranged game with TW Ridgewaye. If they win or draw, they will go through as Group winners. AFC Valour will play TW Ridgewaye with second place at stake, date to be arranged
group 1

In Group 2, Paddock Wood have been awarded the points for their game against Goudhurst United. That group is now complete. Simla and Paddock Wood qualify for the second round. Goudhurst United must wait for the outcome of other matches while they wait to see if they will go through as one of the best third placed teams.

group 2

With the top and bottom of Group 3 already decided, the match between Pembury Sunday and Dormansland Rockets will not be played. Charcott may still go through as a third placed team depending on the final results from Group 1.

group 3

WKSFL Intermediate Cup

Three preliminary round ties were played. Artois United Reserves continued their good run, beating Second Division Odukwe 2-0 with goals from Duncan Ibbotson and Keith Ingles. Brenchley beat Insulators Reserves 4-1 and are coming out of a poor series of results.  There were four different scorers, Ollie Jones, Sean Whelan, Mike Williams and Michel Van Oorschot. David Brooks scored for Insulators Reserves on his debut.

And Speldhurst Rangers ended a long losing streak, beating AFC Borough Reserves 2 - 0. This is not a typo, said their early report. Rangers welcomed AFC Borough  Reserves to St Mary´s Lane. Having already lost to the opposition earlier in the season and on a eight game losing streak, things were looking bleak for Speldhurst. They started brightly and had a couple of half chances but to no avail. It looked like it was going to be goalless at half time when the veteran Andy Watts (who was 50 last Saturday) chipped a ball over to Dan 'Badger' Kelly who beat the full back and tried to square it across the box, a defender deflected the ball past the' keeper into the net to make it 1-0 Speldhurst.

The second half started and Speldhurst braced themselves for the Borough onslaught. Speldhurst were under siege much of the time, but the back line did its job. Rangers soaked up the pressure and tried to hit Borough on the counter. They won a penalty midway through the second half for a handball. Perry Pointing stepped up, looked the keeper in the face and caressed the ball into the bottom left hand corner to consolidate Speldhurst's lead. Borough huffed and puffed but couldn't break down Speldhurst's resolute backline.

The full first round draw draw is thus :
AFC Borough 1st XI  v   Sedlescombe Rangers;  AFC Tonbridge v Speldhurst Rangers; Artois United Reserves v  Royal Oak; Brenchley  v Dormansland Rockets; Dunton Green  v  TW Ridgewaye; Insulators  v  Goudhurst United; Riverside Colts   v  Westerham; Tonbridge United  v  Ticehurst Village
