West Kent Sunday League News Report – Sunday 9th January 2022

I think we spoke too early! The League resumed after a two week holiday week but most players found themselves staying at home. A very wet Saturday resulted in many pitches becoming waterlogged. All but five of the day's scheduled games were called off.

County Cups

Charcott's venture in the Surrey Sunday Premier Cup was short lived. They fell at the first hurdle, losing four - nil away at Banstead Rovers of the Leatherhead Sunday league.

Royal Oak were unable to play their Kent Sunday Junior Trophy match with Vinters from Maidstone. They will try again next week.

Division One / Two

The race to become 'winter champions' is now very close. With Pembury Sunday and Simla unable to play, Artois United leap-frogged them both to the top of the table with a 7-2 win at Insulators.

The scoreline doesn't reflect the much improved effort by Insulators in this game.

The match started predictably, with Artois scoring after 90 seconds with a shot from the edge of the box. For the next half hour Artois had the better of the game but the home side were definitely competitive. However, Artois added two goals within a few minutes as half time approached, to take control. Just before the break a pass from Toby Maslin found Ben Boodle who scored from 15 yards. A little bit of hope for the home manager to work with at half time. 1-3

Early in the second half a pass from Greg Dodson found Ben Boodle and his clever lob just missed its target. Insulators were having a very good spell and in the 73rd minute a poor 'keeper clearance fell to James Dunn who lobbed the keeper from 35 yards. At 2-3 who knows! Whether it was tiredness or Artois stepping up a gear, the last 15 minutes saw them take control but mainly as a result of errors by the home side as four goals were added between the 76th and 86th minute.

Artois scorers were Regan Corke with a hat-trick, Nathan Moseley who hit two, Ben Holder and Lucas Murrain

A good game, well refereed by Mick Syrett.

The only other game in the top Division saw AFC Borough hoist themselves into the top half of the table after they beat  Odukwe 4-0 . Scorers were Jacob Feasey, Sam Edmunds,  Connor Bowesman andFreddie Simmons. Alex Gunn in goal kept the clean sheet. That was Borough's fourth successive league win and Odukwe's fifth successive defeat.

Only one point separates the top three. Their goal differences are almost the same. Who is going to cause an upset? Their remaining games are ;

Artois United v Goudhurst, Dormansland and AFC Tonbridge
Pembury Sunday v  AFC Valour and Paddock Wood
Simla v AFC Tonbridge, Dormansland Rockets and Green Lane.

Only two games went ahead. Artois United Reserves' run of four consecutive victories was stopped by TW Ridgewaye Reserves in 2 - 2 draw at Longmead.  Keith Ingles and Alex Bridges scored for Artois United, Billy McLeod struck both Ridgewaye's goals.

Dunton Green returned to winning ways after two heavy defeats. They also played at Longmead, Tonbridge United being the hosts.  Rory Ward hit a hat-trick for the Green, with the other goals coming from Ed Baker, Henry Smart and Jamie Vernem. They didn't have it all their own way, Hayden Jarvis and Matt Funnell scoring for the home side.
